Overdue Books

Today we continue trying to work out what has been lost, damaged or superceded in our library. I printed out a new list of books that the students have yet to return, despite the letters sent home to parents. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of resources have been returned but there are still the hardcore recalcitrant students who seem to want to souvenir certain things. Unfortunately a number are part of book series or books that are very popular or are CDRoms, that may also be part of a series.

Two videos that inject a little humour into the situation.

The first is a blues song about overdue library books. Maybe only librarians can relate. Written, as a lark, performed, sung, and played by Keith Johnson. But don’t blame me. The “B-B-B-Bad to the Bone” reference is from a George Thorogood song of the same name.

The second is about charging for an overdue book (which we don’t do). Our students (and parents) would probably think this is a little excessive!

With the cost of education soaring, so have overdue library fees. This is an actual voicemail from a librarian at The Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth, Illinois, who claims the fees for an overdue textbook total $3,282.
