The article suggests that by cultivating all five pleasures (identified i y surveying readers) necessary we can promote lifelong reading. “These are already central to our engaged reading and we must make them all central to our teaching”.

Digital literacy: Better Googling. Parent sessions

Recently we ran some Digital literacy session for parents. They were run over three evening and were hour-long session designed to give parents an idea about the tips we give to their sons. The second session was entitled “Better Googling” and explained about how to use the standard Google search more effectively to get the most useful results. This following was a slide presentation I prepared. We always try to make the sessions hands-on and encourage participants to play. There are so many things we could cover but we keep it to an hour because, at the end of the day, we believe this is an optimum length for everyone to concentrate and enjoy the sessions.

Although we used live internet connections, copies of Powerpoint slides given as handouts work well with parents as they like to write down notes.

5P’s for a Positive Digital Footprint

Any content published online will begin to create a digital footprint the individual who is responsible for it. Once it is “out there” it will become part of the online information world and others will form an opinion about the author.

In schools we, as teachers, must make sure we model appropriate behavours as well as teaching our students how to conduct themselves in this forum. Our students need to know not just how to post content, but what they should put there. They neeed to ensure the digital footprint they are creating is a positive one. This includes the complete array of options, be it in the form of posts, photos, messages or comments.

I like this infographic. It is simple but effective. It would be great in up in a classroom especially for our younger students, to serve as a reminder to them.

Digital Citizenship: Your choices

Many times the decisions that you need to make to be a good digital citizen are logical and invlove using some common sense and good manners. However it can be easy to forget or overlook some simple steps hen in a hurry so having prompts/posters/images around to remind us about our rights and responsibilities.

The image below is from the  Anethical Island site. It has many of the components of digital citizenship covered. It would be a great resource to use in the classroom or the library to introduce and/or remind them about the many aspects of digital citizenship. Each component/bos is worthy of discussion from a variety of directions: What does each component mean to the reader? How does it apply to each person? What ones apply now? What behaviours need to change/be altered?  and so on.

Put the poster up and have the conversations with your students and your colleagues

The more our students are online, the more information they will encounter.

It is important for them not only be able to access this information, but also to be the best digital citizens that they can be.
